Johannah Churchill - The NHS Darkroom
Tuesday 12 December 2023
19:30 to 21:30
Johannah Churchill is a portrait and documentary photographer with a background in healthcare. Based in the North East, she divides her time between creating her own photography and teaching it to students.
Johannah will be talking to us about her current work focusing on the human experience of ‘time’ and distortions felt during times of illness, injury or isolation. As well as her research work ‘NHS Darkroom’, through this project with an NHS charity, she provides training to groups of healthcare professionals on how to photograph with 35mm cameras. Participants then learn how to print their pictures in the black and white darkroom with individualised support, allowing time for moments of pause and reflection in and around the workplace.
Johannah has exhibited widely and her internationally recognised portrait of Melanie, March 2020 has become synonymous with the coronavirus pandemic. Her work is held by the National Portrait Gallery, the Wellcome Collection and Sunderland Winter Gardens. She has also contributed to publications such as the Financial Times, the Telegraph, the Guardian and the British Journal of Photography.
