2019 Annual Exhibition Opens

Hexham & District Photographic Society is pleased to announce that the annual exhibition of member’s images, is now open until the 18th of August in the North Transept of Hexham Abbey. The exhibition reflects the diverse range of interests of the societies membership, with over 60 stunning prints and digital images all produced by the members of the society.

Society vice-president Gerry Stephens said: “The event has attracted thousands of visitors in the past, so it would be great to see the same turn out again this year.”

This year, work by photographers such as Danny Brannigan, Lesley Middleton, Sheila Stranger and Dave Strother will be featured. The exhibition is open daily from 10:00 till 16:30 between services in the Abbey.

The Society was first established in 1946 by Donald Low, although there are references to a local photographic society dating back as far as the early 1890s – perhaps involving local Hexham pharmacist and Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, John Pattison Gibson (1838-1912).

Today the society meets Tuesday evenings from the start of September to the end of April in the Torch Centre, with the aim of promoting interest in and study of all aspects of photography. This is achieved through a varied programme of talks, competitions, photographic assignments and tuition, catering for all ages and abilities.

Recent meetings have ranged from talks from renowned photographers such as Simon Gakah and Will Nicholl, to practical sessions, covering Photography of exotic animals and using off camera flash to capture water droplets. Projects and events are also undertaken in collaboration with other local groups and businesses, such as the recent keynote delivered by Conrad Dickinson which successfully raised over £1051 for Northumberland Wildlife Trust.

All photographers, from beginners to seasoned professionals are warmly welcomed by our members, anyone interested in joining the Society is invited to attend a couple of meetings with no obligation, to see if the activities suit their interests.

An Annual Membership of £35 provides access to a varied programme, for more information please email hexhamps@hexhamphotographic.org
